Police have identified the 15-year-old boy shot to death in a Mississauga schoolyard on Friday evening.

Evan Popoola was found without vital signs behind St. Jude Separate School at 175 Nahani Way around 6:30 p.m.

Peel Region police officers were called to the school after local residents reported hearing gunshots.

Police found the victim lying in the sports field, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.

Investigators do not yet know who was with the victim at the time he was shot, or what led someone to pull a gun on him.

"The biggest portion of the investigation will be trying to identify who he was with, which may help with who the suspect is and then if the suspect was with anyone, figuring out that as well," Peel Region media relations Constable Wayne Patterson told CTV.ca "And figuring out what led up to this violent confrontation where he was shot and killed."

Police only have a vague description of the suspect. They know he is male with a thin build and he was last seen wearing shorts.

Witnesses saw him running southward from the scene. Police believe he is still armed.

The teen's death marks Peel Region's 19th homicide of the year.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Peel police homicide bureau at 905-453-2121, ext. 3205 or Peel Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS.
