Police have identified the four men that were shot Saturday after gunfire erupted in a residential area in Rexdale, but haven't found a suspect.

Jose Hierro-Saez, 19, died at the scene with a gunshot wound to the head.

Police say the wounded men are Paddy McFrinn, 18, Moustaffa Omar, 20, and Matthew Dale, 18.

A silver Mercedes-Benz SUV opened fire on a car carrying the victims at about 3:15 p.m.

Shots were fired for at least a kilometre along John Garland Boulevard in the city's far northwest end.

Bullet casings could be been on the street afterward.

"It's scary, you can see the number of people in this area," said Toronto Police Superintendent Ron Taverner. "We have a shooting in the middle of the day when there's people walking on the street. It's a total disregard for people."

One man, who was shot in the head, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body lay on the road, covered by a bright yellow sheet.

Paramedics wheeled the other three wounded into ambulances and transported them to the hospital. Two of them are considered to be in life-threatening condition.

Numerous police cars lined the street at the scene near Albion and Islington as shotgun-toting officers fanned out.

Residents were panicked and fearful as word of the shooting spread through the neighbourhood.

One woman broke down in tears after she heard that her son may have been hurt in the shooting.

"Right now, obviously we are trying to interview, get the facts together and just carry on," Taverner said.

The shooting comes just over a week after Lorraine Small made this plea: "I just don't want to see any other family go through this."

Her son Jordan Manners died of a gunshot wound at C.W. Jeffreys High School on May 23. Two 17-year-olds have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with that incident.

A review of school safety has been launched in response to that event. Local lawyer Julian Falconer will head the panel.

On the evening of May 31, about 30 shots were fired outside Small's home. She was moved to a safe house in response.
