Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection to a spate of muggings in the city's downtown core.

The robberies occurred primarily in the area of Bloor Street West and Christie Street between 6 and 8 a.m. on Friday. Other robberies occurred in the vicinity of Spadina Avenue and Queen's Quay.

Police say at least seven women were approached by a man who pointed what appeared to be a handgun at them and demanded money. In some of the cases the man fled the scene with a quantity of cash.

It's alleged that Yama Mokhtarzada of Toronto carried out 12 "street level" robberies with a firearm in tow. He faces 57 charges related to robbery and firearm offences.

Police are also searching for another suspect they believe drove a getaway vehicle during some of the incidents. The person has been described a male between 20 and 25 years of age, possibly of Middle Eastern descent.
