A massive house fire in Scarborough left four family members injured and four police officers suffering smoke inhalation early Thursday morning.

Toronto police said the fire began at about 1:30 a.m. inside a detached home on Marilake Drive, near Highway 401 and Brimley Road.

According to police, a couple escaped the blaze suffering various burns and told police four others were still inside.

Toronto police and fire crews searched the blaze and found two children and their grandparents in the back yard.

Four family members were taken to a Scarborough hospital with burns and other ailments.

The mother suffered burns to her feet and her husband was burned on the elbow. Two grandparents suffered smoke inhalation.

Two children escaped the fire without injury, investigators said.

Toronto police said four officers also suffered smoke inhalation and were treated at the scene.

The blaze left the home gutted. Toronto fire officials said the damage has been estimated at about $250,000.
