The York Regional Police issued a public alert following the release of a "high-risk offender" into the Oak Ridges area of Richmond Hill.

Thinath Ganendralingam recently served a seven-month sentence for animal cruelty and breach of probation.

The 21-year-old is "a risk to vulnerable members of our community and to animals," police said in the alert issued Friday night.

Ganendralingam is under "strict supervision," police said, noting that the York Regional Police High-Risk Offender Unit and the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services Probation and Parole Office are monitoring his activities.

According to his probation order, Ganendralingam cannot have custody of any animals or live anywhere where there are animals. He cannot be in the presence of anyone younger than 16 unless accompanied by an adult.

Ganendralingam is described as 5'5" tall, "slender with a medium build," with a moustache, brown skin, brown eyes, and a scar of his left cheek.

Members of the public are asked to report any suspicious behaviour to 1-866-876-5423, ext. 2664 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
