Authorities are at the scene of a small helicopter crash near Brampton that killed the pilot -- the aircraft's lone occupant.

First reports of the crash came in after 8 p.m.

Witness Jim Ferri said he saw the Robinson R22 helicopter plummet from the sky and hit the ground hard.

"It was just flying over and then all of a sudden it just nosedived," he said. The helicopter crashed in an apple orchard he owned.

The crash scene is near 8377 Heritage Road, north of Steeles Avenue and east of Mississauga Road.

Police say the helicopter was a two seater and the flight originated from Toronto Island Airport.
