An 18-month-old North Ajax boy is Ontario's latest drowning victim.

Durham Regional Police said Tuesday that Isaac Syme had been removed from life support this past weekend.

On July 11, his mother had found him lying face down in a pond on their property.

"She was assisted by her husband who commenced CPR while she dialed 911," police said.

Emergency crews rushed to their 3415 Greenwood Rd. residence, with the call coming in at about 9:50 a.m.

"The child’s heartbeat was re-established and he began to breathe during transport to a local hospital," police said.

Doctors at that hospital assessed Syme, then had him transferred to the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. He had originally been listed as being in critical condition.

Quick response saves life

Durham Police say a quick response on Saturday prevented an 11-year-old Pickering boy from being added to the growing death toll.

The boy got into trouble about 150 metres off shore. Two Durham Police officers, there working at the Oshawa International Festival at Lakeview Park, and one civilian helped get the boy to shore. An off-duty doctor and paramedic helped provide first aid.

The youth was taken to hospital but is expected to make a full recovery.
