An Ajax couple is devastated after a silver pendant containing the ashes of their infant son was stolen in a break-in at their home.

"He's already been taken from us once, now he's been taken away from us again," David Hutchison told CTV Toronto through tears.

The Hutchisons lost their son in April 2002 to a rare bone disease. The child died just 16 days after birth.

Durham Regional Police say the family home on Clements Road East was broken into sometime Monday. Several items were taken during the robbery, but the couple is pleading for the return of the pendant. Here is a description:

  • The silver chain about 16 inches in length
  • The pendant is in the shape of a circle, is about the size of toonie and is about three-quarters of an inch thick
  • There are engravings on both sides of the pendant that look like leaves and branches

Investigators don't believe the thief knew the ashes were located inside the jewelry item. The thief is being urged to turn in the pendant.

Hutchison said he and his wife Lorraine won't ask any questions -- they just want the family treasure back.

"This is irreplaceable," Hutchison said. "Just return the locket to us because that's all we have left of him."

Anyone with information about the pendant is asked to call police at 905-683-9100, 905-579-1520 ext. 2524 or call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
