The home of long-standing Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion was broken into in January, Peel police have confirmed.

Police won't release any details about the break-in other than to say it happened on January 16 while the 87-year-old mayor was not at home.

Authorities would not confirm reports that jewelry and commemorative pins were stolen.

They said they are still investigating the robbery.

McCallion has been the mayor of Mississauga since 1978 and is the longest-serving mayor in the city's history.
