Toronto police are looking for witnesses after a woman was struck and killed by a dump truck in the city's east end.

The garbage truck was travelling in the area of St. Clair Avenue East and Jeanette Street, near Brimley Road, at about 7:35 a.m. The 53-year-old woman was struck while attempting to cross the street to catch the bus.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

One local resident told reporters there are few places for pedestrians to cross safely in the area.

"There should be a crosswalk," said the woman. "There are a lot of kids in the area."

The driver of the truck was visibly shaken after the accident.

No charges have been laid yet.

Police said several people were standing at a bus stop on the north side of the street at the time of the accident but didn't stay to give authorities their witness testimony.

Instead they boarded the next bus and left the scene.

Authorities are urging them to come forward with details on what they saw.
