A 27-year-old woman is dead after being by a school bus early Wednesday morning.

Toronto police said the pedestrian was hit by a short school bus as she was crossing Jane Street near Driftwood Avenue at about 7 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Toronto emergency medical officials confirmed the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were no children on the bus at the time of the accident, police said, adding that the driver remained at the scene. Police said charges were pending.

"(The pedestrian) had activated the signal; she was in the process of crossing lawfully," said Const. Hugh Smith.
