A 23-year-old man who was struck by a car while crossing a street early Monday morning has died from his injuries, Toronto police say.

The pedestrian was crossing mid-block when he was struck by a Hyundai Azera in the westbound lanes of Steeles Avenue West, just east of Bathurst Street, around 1:25 a.m. Monday.

He was rushed to hospital with a severe head injury but police say late Monday night that the man succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the pedestrian, dressed in black, was attempting to cross Steeles from south to north, and apparently was not seen by the driver.

The car was approaching a green light at the time, police said.

The driver stopped at the scene after hitting the man. The road was wet after overnight rain.

Police closed a stretch of Steeles until 6:15 a.m. as they conducted an investigation at the scene.

Officers continue to investigate to determine whether charges are warranted.
