TORONTO - Paul Maurice says he has one regret when he looks back at his two seasons as head coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs -- the firing of former GM John Ferguson.

He says he looks at that as being under "his watch,'' because as coach he wasn't able to get the results on the ice.

Maurice, a 41-year-old native of Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., was fired this week.

The team axed Ferguson last January and replaced him with Cliff Fletcher on an interim basis.

Toronto finished 12th in the Eastern Conference with a 36-35-11 record, missing a playoff spot by 11 points.

A new coach won't be hired until a search committee finds a permanent general manager.
