A church pastor and his wife in eastern Ontario saved the life of a teenaged girl after the vehicle she was in went into the icy cold Trent River.

Rev. Dan Wood, who's a former firefighter, and his wife Liane had just finished their Wednesday night program at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Church in Frankford, north of Trenton, around 8:30 p.m. when someone yelled a vehicle had gone into the river.

A 13-year-old girl had been alone in the mini SUV in the church parking lot when it suddenly slipped into reverse, crashed through a fence and over a retaining wall and plunged into the river upside down.

The couple grabbed a ladder to help themselves get into the water.

Liane swam to the side door, but it was locked.

But the back hatch was unlocked and the couple freed the teen from the back of the vehicle.

Both the girl and the couple were showing the effects of hypothermia.

They got the girl to the ladder and onlookers helped take her to safety.

The teen is back home with her parents.
