New passport screening technology could cut wait times for travellers heading to the United States from Toronto's Pearson International Airport.

Officials with the airport and U.S. Customs and Border Protection launched automated passport control kiosks on Wednesday.

The self-service machines scan passports, take photos and ask questions before directing travellers to a U.S. customs officer.

During an unveiling at Pearson airport, U.S. officials said the average wait time at passport kiosks installed at other airports is 17 minutes – a reduction of about 36 per cent.

The technology was already in use at seven other airports, including in Montreal and Vancouver.
