FORT ERIE, Ont. -- Ontario's police watchdog is investigating the police involved shooting of a man in Fort Erie, Ont. Friday evening.

The Special Investigations Unit says Niagara Regional Police officers responded to the Urgent Care Centre at the Douglas Memorial Site in response to a stabbing at around 8 p.m..

Upon arrival, the SIU says the officers saw a 61-year-old man with knife wounds, and soon after they were approached by a 29-year-old man.

The SIU says there was an interaction with police during which the 29-year old man was shot by one of the officers.

The man was taken to the Erie County Medical Centre in Buffalo for treatment, as was the older man who was stabbed, but there was no immediate word on either man's condition.

Five investigators and three forensic investigators have been assigned to the case.
