TORONTO - Ontario Ombudsman Andre Marin says he will investigate the way the provincial Health Ministry approves funding for the drug Herceptin.

His announcement today comes after a woman was denied funding for the drug.

Health Minister Deb Matthews says she welcomes Marin's investigation and her department will co-operate with it.

The province's funding of Herceptin is limited to patients whose tumours are larger than one centimetre.

Marin says his office has been looking into the issue since Feb. 28, after a complaint from Jill Anzarut.

Anzarut said she was told her breast cancer tumour was too small to qualify.

Matthews has said previously it would be wrong to interfere in the approval process.
