CTV News has learned that the Ontario Energy Board quietly gave utilities companies permission seven months ago to increase their customers' monthly gas bills in the coming years.

The move allowed companies such as Union Gas and Enbridge to increase their profit margins by 1.5 per cent starting in 2013.

The Ontario NDP said Friday that the move will transfer $55 million out of the pockets of Ontario families and into the coffers of the natural gas suppliers.

That works out to about $10 per household.

On Thursday, CTV News reported that the OEB gave electrical utilities permission to increase profit margins by a total of $240 million, or about $60 to the average household's electric bill.
