An Ontario man accused of trying to kill his wife while they were on vacation in Jamaica was kept in police custody after a court appearance in the island nation on Friday.

Paul Martin, a 43-year-old schoolteacher from Ajax, is accused of slashing his wife Cathy-Lee's throat and blaming the near-fatal attack on a carjacker.

His next appearance will be Feb. 28.

Charged with attempted murder, Paul Martin has been in custody in Jamaica since the Dec. 23 incident. His wife has returned to their hometown of Ajax, just east of Toronto.

Cathy-Lee Martin, a 34-year-old bank manager, suffered serious injuries when she was attacked in an isolated area near the resort city of Montego Bay.

During tearful testimony at a preliminary hearing Dec. 28, she accused her husband of slitting her throat and attempting to strangle her.

Her injuries were inflicted the day the couple, which has two kids aged five and two, was scheduled to leave Jamaica. The Martins reportedly travelled to the Caribbean nation to mend their strained relationship.

Paul Martin, a teacher at St. Francis de Sales Catholic School in Ajax, allegedly told his wife he was taking her on a sightseeing tour before heading to the airport but drove the van into a secluded area, the Jamaica Observer newspaper reported.

Despite her serious injuries, Cathy-Lee Martin was able to escape her assailant and seek help. She was rescued by a passing taxi driver and driven to a hospital, where she underwent surgery.

Police arrested Martin a short time later. He told investigators his wife was attacked by a stranger during a robbery attempt, the Jamaica Constabulary Force said.

Martin was denied bail during the preliminary hearing.
