TORONTO - Premier Dalton McGuinty admits there's no reason the Ontario government can't find out how many students complete the four-year high school program in four years.

Ontario includes students who take up to five years to complete high school in its graduation rates, and the Ministry of Education insists it doesn't even track how many graduate in four years.

Ontario scrapped Grade 13 in 2003, but McGuinty says his government wanted to "compare apples to apples" so it kept including students who take up to five years to finish in its graduation rate.

After insisting that as a parent, he doesn't care if kids take four or five years to graduate, McGuinty conceded the province could track the four-year grad rate if it wanted to.

The self-described education premier said it probably wouldn't hurt to know that information.

The opposition parties agree Ontario parents should know how many kids graduate in four years, and say they suspect Ontario's real grad rate is much lower than the claimed 77 per cent.
