One person was killed and another injured when a Pontiac Sunfire struck a street pole and was cut in half in Scarborough early Sunday.

The crash occurred on a curve along Birmorton Drive near Markham and Bellamy Roads at 4:19 a.m. Police say the car was travelling at twice the speed limit, which is 40 kilometres per hour.

When emergency personnel arrived at the crash scene, they found the car split in two and a massive debris field.

The male driver, aged 28, was ejected from the car during the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger, aged 27, has serious but non life-threatening injuries and has been taken to hospital.

Police believe that both men were wearing seatbelts, and officers expect to question the injured passenger about the events leading up to the crash.

Toronto police Sgt. Tim Burrows said that neither man lived in the area.

While the road does have a tight curve, warning lights and yield signs have been posted nearby to warn drivers.
