One person has died after a mutli-vehicle crash involving a tractor-trailer on Highway 400 occurred just before the noon hour.

Police have confirmed the 41-year-old male driver of a red Camaro succumbed to his injuries after being taken to Royal Victoria Hospital in Barrie and then airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

It's reported that one vehicle attempted to change lanes but collided with the Camaro and a minivan.

The Camaro then spun out of control and was struck by a tractor-trailer, which resulted in multiple collisions on the highway.

The top half of the Camaro and left side was sheered off in the five-vehicle crash.

The deceased, reportedly from Hillsdale, has not been identified.

"He was conscious, but after about 10 minutes he went from skin tone to white," Brian Wells, a motorist who tried to help the victim, told CTV News at the scene.

A man and woman who were travelling in the mini van were also sent to hospital in Barrie with minor injuries.

The Ontario Provincial Police's traffic support unit is on the scene and has begun diverting traffic.

Traffic continues to be backed up on Highway 400 as traffic is reduced to one lane in either direction.

OPP officers expect the lanes to be reopened by 8 p.m.
