One man is dead and another is injured after a head-on collision in Scarborough late Saturday night.

The Toronto Police Traffic Services division says the crash occurred in the McCowan Rd. and Meldazy Dr. area around 10:54 p.m.

According to a police statement, an Acura MDX travelling southbound on McCowan Rd. veered over the centre line and into the northbound lanes, where it struck a Toyota Camry head-on "causing substantial damage to both vehicles."

The 55-year-old driver of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene. The 36-year-old driver of the Acura was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Hours later, York Region police were called to the scene of a serious crash on Rutherford Rd., east of Highway 50.

The two-vehicle collision occurred at 2 a.m. Sunday. Six people, including two in critical condition, are being treated in hospital for various injuries.
