A Port Perry couple opened their door Thursday afternoon to find a bleeding man asking for help following a shooting incident that left another man dead.

“We were just about to leave the house when we heard this ‘bang, bang’ on the door. We opened he door and this guy fell in,” Glenn Gutteridge told CTV Toronto.

Gutteridge and Wendy Clark asked the man if they could help him.

“He said, ‘I’ve been shot,’” Gutteridge said. “We pulled him in, sat him down, checked and saw two holes in his back, and we started calling the police.”

Police received a call at about 4:30 p.m.

The man, who is 35 years old, told them his buddy had been shot too.

Paramedics first took the man to the local hospital, but he was then airlifted to Toronto’s Sunnybrook hospital, which has a trauma centre. However, he had been discharged by late Thursday evening.

Blood stained the carpet of Gutteridge and Clark’s home.

Police found the second man dead in a home’s basement in the Crandell Street/Scugog Street area.

Officers conducted a search of the area in the shooting’s wake. So far, they have no suspects in custody, but Insp. Joe Maiorano told reporters at the scene, “At this point, we do not feel the community’s safety is at risk.”

Late Thursday evening, Durham police issued a news release saying the matter was being treated as a homicide and that identification of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

It is the third homicide in Durham region so far in 2010.

“Anyone with new information about this ongoing investigation is asked to contact Det. Terry Haight of the DRPS Homicide Unit at 1-888-579-1520 ext. 5247. Anonymous information can be sent to Durham Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or www.durhamcrimestoppers.ca and tipsters may be eligible for a cash reward of up to $2,000,” police said.
