Crews worked late into the night Tuesday to recover the body of a 25-year-old man who died in a tragic construction accident near Toronto's York University.
A drilling rig fell at a TTC construction site killing one construction worker, trapping another and injuring four other men.
The heavy machinery toppled near the university's Schulich School of Business at James Gillies Street and York Boulevard at 2:30 p.m.
The name of the deceased has not been released.
The trapped man was taken to Sunnybrook hospital just before 5 p.m. after a medical team was able to rescue him from under the heavy equipment without any surgical intervention. He suffered serious leg injuries.
EMS spokesperson Peter Macintrye told CTV Toronto that two people were transported to Sunnybrook and two others were sent to York-Finch hospital with minor injuries.
Const. Tony Vella said that one man taken to the hospital suffered serious head injuries.
TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said that excavation work and tunneling was underway at the site for a new subway station.
"A heavy piece of machinery collapsed or gave way on the site and unfortunately resulted in the death of one individual and the injuries of others," Ross said. The work was being done by sub-contracted workers.
The cause of the collapse is not clear at this time but police said that the ground was unstable at the time of the incident.
The Ministry of Labour is on the scene investigating.
Steeles Avenue West between Keele and Jane Streets has reopened to traffic.
Classes at York's Seymour Schulich Building were cancelled Tuesday night.
