An off-duty police inspector has died after a pickup truck collided with his car on a rural road in the Uxbridge area, north of Toronto.

The officer has been identified as 54-year-old York Regional Police Supt. Mark Grant. He died at the scene of the crash.

Grant's female passenger, also 54, was seriously injured. Her condition is serious but stable, York police said.

The 76-year-old driver of the pickup truck was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The incident happened just before 3:40 p.m. on Thursday.

The crash occurred near the intersection of Sanford Road and the York-Durham Line.

Grant was returning home from the International Association of Chiefs of Police conference, which had taken place in Chicago.

Grant began his career with YRP in August 1979.

In a release Thursday evening, York Regional Police Chief Eric Jolliffe expressed "his heartfelt sympathy to the family, friends and colleagues of Supt. Grant."
