Railcars derail in remote area of northeastern Ontario

Update on train derailment near Hearst, Ont. CN Rail said Tuesday that two derailed railcars are leaking diesel fuel, but the leak has been contained and crews are on site.

CN crews were called to a train derailment in a remote part of northeastern Ontario on Monday.

Ashley Michnowski, a spokesperson for the company, said in an email Monday evening that about 10 cars derailed at around 2:45 p.m. in Jogues, southwest of Hearst.

"There are no reports of injuries or fires at this time," Michnowski said.

While a local evacuation order was put in place Monday, but Tuesday afternoon she said the order had been lifted. And Michnowski clarified that nine railcars had derailed, not 10 as originally estimated.

"The precautionary evacuation was lifted last night," she said.

"Two of the derailed railcars are leaking diesel fuel in a contained space that has not impacted any water ways. Crews will remain on site for clean-up activities and track repairs in the coming days."

Ontario Provincial Police also responded to the incident and asked the public around 5 p.m. to avoid the area.

Around 12 hours later, police said officers had cleared the scene and the road had been reopened.
