Northern Ont. man on probation charged with intimate partner violence, firearms offences

Calls grow for measures to combat IPV A North Bay man is working with activist Cait Alexander to combat the rising number of cases of intimate partner violence.

New details have emerged about a police standoff in northern Ontario that sent a school and day care into lockdown last month after police lay intimate partner violence-related charges.

Officers were called to a home on Algonquin Street in Kapuskasing around 10:45 a.m. Nov. 18 when a "domestic disturbance" escalated into the suspect barricading themselves inside, Ontario Provincial Police said in a news release.

The road was closed as specialized police units and crisis negotiators descended on the scene.

After eight hours of negotiation, police were able to apprehend the 44-year-old man from Moonbeam around 7 p.m.

He was taken to hospital via ambulance for assessment and care.

Police laid 14 charges against him Dec. 8 following medical treatment.

The man wasn't in hospital the entire time over the last three weeks, OPP Const. Kyler Brouwer told CTVNewsNorthernOntario.ca in an email Tuesday.

Was on probation prohibited from guns

The suspect, who was on probation at the time of the incident, was charged with breaking into the home along several firearms and weapons charges.

He is charged with using a gun to commit a crime, unauthorized possession of a gun, two counts of having a weapon for a dangerous purpose, careless use of a gun, drug possession, three counts of failing to comply with a probation order and four counts of failing to comply with an undertaking.

"Due to the intimate partner nature of the incident, the name of the accused will not be released in order to protect the identity of the victim," OPP said.

He remains in custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Kapuskasing on Dec. 11.
