NEW TECUMSETH, Ont. - The unsung hero wants to remain unsung.

Provincial police say a man who rescued another driver from a burning truck in New Tecumseth last week wants to remain anonymous.

The drama unfolded last Thursday when a garbage truck hit a hydro pole and caught fire in the town about 80 kilometres north of Toronto.

A nearby resident who heard the crash told police that a man in a blue pickup stopped and pulled the trapped driver from the garbage truck before leaving the scene.

When emergency crews arrived, the garbage truck was engulfed in flames and the driver was lying unconscious on the ground -- but the rescuer was gone.

The man has since identified himself to police but he doesn't want any public recognition, saying he just did what anyone should have done.

The driver of the garbage truck, a 54-year-old man from Wasaga Beach, suffered head injuries and was treated and released from hospital. Police say charges are pending in the single-vehicle collision.
