Residents were evacuated, businesses were closed and streets shut down after a natural gas leak occurred at O'Connor Drive at Coxwell Avenue.

The intermediate-pressure gas line was punctured by work crews at approximately 8 a.m. Wednesday, causing the gas leak.

Twenty-five homes and businesses were evacuated and police advised residents to close their windows so as not to inhale the fumes.

Multiple businesses lost their daily revenue as work crews monitored air quality in the area.

"It's going to cost me for sure because now I've lost my lunch crowd," said a local Mr. Sub owner.

He estimates he lost $350 due to the forced closure.

Local residents said a monstrous roar could be heard throughout the neighbourhood as the gas seeped into the air.

"You know when you are standing right next to Niagara Falls, that's exactly what it sounds like," Voula Rossi, who works nearby, told CTV News from the scene of the leak.

"It was just the workers working, they were digging, and then you heard this noise. Everybody backed off."

Several emergency crews arrived on the scene and police cordoned off the area, from Don Mills Road to Woodbine Avenue.

Toronto Fire Services monitored the air quality in the area, and confirmed there was no danger as the gas continues to dissipate.
