A convicted murderer who disappeared while on a day pass from a minimum-security prison was back in custody on Tuesday after Toronto police found him by chance.

Ashley Brent Crawford, 30, was arrested by bail compliance officers in Toronto's west end around 8 p.m. Monday. Toronto Police Const. Tony Vella said officers recognized Crawford while in Etobicoke on an unrelated call.

Crawford was on a three-day, unescorted day pass from Beaver Creek Institution in Gravenhurst, Ont., but did not report back Friday night.

Crawford is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2001 of setting a fire that killed his girlfriend's former lesbian lover.

Crawford was convicted of first-degree murder after he set fire to Nancy Fillmore's house in Killaloe, Ont. while she was inside, drunk and asleep. Killaloe is just outside Algonquin Provincial Park.

Dave Whitton, the assistant warden of Beaver Creek, confirmed Crawford was back in custody. He said they would review their day pass policies to determine whether changes should be made.
