A man was shot dead early Wednesday morning in an east-end neighbourhood in Toronto, making him the 38th Toronto homicide victim of 2009.

Police were called to 20 Boultbee Ave., located south of Danforth and east of Pape Avenue, at around 12:30 a.m. by witnesses who heard several gunshots being fired.

Authorities say they searched for 40 minutes before finding a victim. The man was located behind a home in the area with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police they saw people running from the scene after the gun was fired.

The scene was blocked off overnight to give investigators a better look at the crime scene come daylight, according to an officer at 55 Division.

Police do not have a suspect in custody. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled for Thursday.

Police say they are withholding the 30-year-old victim's name pending notification of his next-of-kin.
