The parents of a murdered York University student from China say they have confidence in the Canadian justice system as they await the start of the accused killer's trial.

Jianhui Liu and his wife, Zheng Yaru, spoke exclusively to CTV Toronto through a police interpreter on Sunday before they boarded a plane back to Beijing at Pearson International Airport.

They travelled to Toronto to attend the preliminary hearings for 30-year-old Brian Dickson, charged with murdering their 23-year-old daughter Qian Liu last April.

Speaking through Toronto police Const. Bill Chan, who accompanied them to the airport, Liu's parents said they appreciate all the support they've been given in Toronto. They expressed their faith in the court proceedings and said they will be back for Dickson's trial.

Liu was found dead in her basement unit in a student rooming house near the York University campus on April 15, 2011. She had been chatting with her boyfriend in Beijing via webcam when a man knocked on the door and walked in.

Liu's boyfriend witnessed part of the struggle that ensued before the webcam was disconnected.

Liu's body was discovered later that day, naked from the waist down.

Police charged Dickson, who lived in a different unit of the same house, with first-degree murder. He was ordered to stand trial last week and his next court appearance is set for March 21.
