Toronto police say they have received several phone calls Monday night from potential witnesses to a fatal shooting over the weekend.
The calls to the station increased after police publicly released a security video Monday afternoon showing a suspect firing off his gun into a unsuspecting group of men.
One of the men, 18-year-old Abdikarim Ahmed Abdikarim, was shot in the head and later died in hospital. Funeral services were held for the aspiring doctor Tuesday afternoon in an Etobicoke mosque. More than 1,200 mourners attended the service.
"He wanted to become a doctor and this child was a beautiful kid," said one man.
The victim's father Ahmed Abdikarim said he chose not to view the shooting footage.
Five other men were wounded in the shooting though they did not receive serious injuries.
The footage shows two men walking along a footpath in the Lawrence Heights neighbourhood when they come across the group. The two men are walking in close proximity but they are not seen speaking to each other.
Police say the gunman got the group's attention before shooting.
"His actions are very discriminate and it's obvious that he intended to inflict maximum damage," Det. Sgt. Brian Borg, of the Toronto police homicide squad, said at a news conference Monday morning.
The footage then shows the two men running in different directions and out of the views of the cameras. Witnesses told police they saw a silver or grey car leaving a nearby parking lot at high speeds.
Borg reiterated that there was only one gun and one gunman involved in the shooting.
"We are obviously interested in speaking with the person seen in this footage, who is with the gunman, and who may or may not have been aware of what was about to take place," Borg said.
On Tuesday, police said they chose to release the video because surveillance footage has played a key role in solving crimes in the past.
