A Toronto-area mother charged in the death of her four-month-old child made her first court appearance on Thursday.

Corinne Platonov, 40, faces a first-degree murder charge after the lifeless body of her infant son was found inside a Mississauga home near Highway 401 and Hurontario Street on Wednesday.

She made a brief court appearance Thursday, appearing calm and looking straight ahead in the prisoner's box of a Brampton courtroom.

The child has been identified as Alexander Platonov, Peel Regional Police said. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Neighbours said that they saw an ambulance at the Mississauga home Wednesday.

A man driving a blue car pulled up to the house and got out. He was crying and shaking his head.

Neighbours think the man was the father, who is a cardiologist at Trillium Health Centre in Mississauga.

Paramedics came outside with the baby, said neighbour Manisha Pathak.

"I couldn't see the baby's face. All I could see was his body and he was naked," said Pathak.

The baby didn't appear to be moving when paramedics took him away, she said.

Neighbours said the family was very friendly and had moved into the home about two years ago.

Neighbours also said that they have another young boy.

"They look like normal people," said one neighbour. "They looked like a happy family."

Police aren't releasing any more details at this time.

Two police cars remained at the home Thursday as police continued their investigation.

Platonov will appear in court again on May 24.
