A 55-year-old woman has been charged in a collision that killed one pedestrian and seriously injured another in Markham.

The deadly collision occurred at the intersection of Markham Road and Elson Street Thursday at about 6:30 p.m.

In a news release, York Regional Police said a 2009 Toyota Matrix travelling south on Markham Road allegedly went through a red light and struck an oncoming 2005 Toyota Camry that was making a left-hand turn.

After that collision, the Matrix continued in a southwest direction, where it struck two Markham women on a sidewalk, police said.

A 61-year-old woman died as she was being rushed to hospital, while a 48-year-old woman was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, police said. The 59-year-old man who was driving the Camry was not injured.

Police said the driver of the Matrix was arrested at a hospital where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Shabana Ahmed of Markham is charged with dangerous driving causing death, dangerous driving causing bodily harm, and dangerous driving. Ahmed was released from custody and is scheduled to return to court Aug. 12.
