Jon Woodward is an accomplished investigative videojournalist at CTV News Toronto. His reporting in Toronto, as well as work with CTV News Vancouver and with W5, has won numerous awards for excellence, with measurable real-world impacts.

In 2023, Jon reported on a trip to Las Vegas involving an Ontario minister and a developer of land in the province’s Greenbelt. Days later, the minister and aides resigned and planned changes to the protected land worth billions of dollars — already under heavy scrutiny by many members of the press — were scrapped.

In 2020, he was a key member of the team that earned a RTDNA award for an investigation into years of bogus expense claims at the B.C. Legislature. In 2016, Jon broke stories about a scheme to profit off a book by convicted serial killer Robert Pickton — stories that led to a new law, the Profits of Criminal Notoriety Act, that would seize revenues from criminals attempting to make money by recounting their crimes.

His hidden camera investigations have looked into a “natural health doctor” claiming to cure cancer, explored failures by casinos to protect problem gamblers, and exposed dubious ploys by equipment salespeople. His reporting on money laundering in B.C.’s casinos was cited by that province in a sweeping crackdown.

An investigation into people dying in a network of drug recovery homes won a Jack Webster Award in 2013, and prompted the B.C. government to spend millions trying to fix the system. At W5, Jon has covered the opioid crisis, explored the wrongful conviction of Ivan Henry, and looked into whether an RCMP officer helped cover up a murder.

The Canadian Bar Association honoured Jon with a Certificate of Merit for his reporting on how a botched federal government strategy encouraged payments to human smugglers. Before joining CTV News, Jon was among the recipients of a Gemini award for his work as the associate producer on The Pig Farm, a documentary about the case of Vancouver’s missing women.

Jon reported on the civil war in Uganda for the CBC, The Ottawa Citizen, The Globe and Mail, and TIME Magazine. Jon has a degree in mathematics from the University of British Columbia. He enjoyed teaching at Langara College and learned the craft at the country’s best J-School: The Ubyssey student newspaper.
