Toronto EMS took a middle-aged pedestrian to a trauma centre for treatment of potentially life-threatening injuries after a TTC streetcar struck the man.

The incident happened at the intersection of St. Andrews Street and Spadina Avenue at about 10:10 a.m. on Friday.

"It looked like the guy was jaywalking," witness Nikisha Reyes-Grange told CTV Toronto.

"The driver was braking really hard and honking and trying to avoid (him), but he couldn’t stop the car in time to avoid the jaywalker."

Reyes-Grange had spoken with Toronto Police officers at the scene.

The accident happened very close to a marked crosswalk.

Spadina Streetcars have a dedicated right-of-way. Streetcars remained on diversion until shortly before 2 p.m. to allow police to continue their investigation.

Jessica Martin, a TTC spokesperson, said this is the second collision between a pedestrian and streetcar in that general area in the past 24 hours.

On Thursday, a streetcar struck a woman who was crossing the tracks, she said.

That incident occurred at 11:50 a.m. In that case, the pedestrian was also jaywalking, she said.

Fortunately, the woman only suffered minor injuries, Martin said.
