A broken watermain has forced road crews to close part of the Queen Elizabeth Way in Mississauga for emergency repairs.

Only two westbound lanes on the QEW are open from Cawthra Road to Hurontario Street as crews work to fix broken pipes beneath the highway.

Earlier Saturday morning, crews had shut down all westbound lanes of the QEW. Two left lanes were reopened just before 10:30 a.m.

Authorities became aware of the damaged pipes after receiving reports of water on and around the highway early Saturday morning.

The ramp from Cawthra to the QEW has also been shut down.

The repairs could take until 7:30 p.m., a Ministry of Transportation official told CP24.

“Crews are onsite and the repairs are ongoing,” Kieran Scott, a spokesperson for Peel Region, wrote in an emailed statement.

“Commuters should expect delays or avoid using this area if possible.”

Nearby, North Service Road is closed from Astra Drive to Cawthra Road.

The broken watermain caused a sinkhole to form on North Service Road, according to CP24’s Katie Simpson. Water eventually crept onto the highway.
