Colleagues of a Toronto woman slain in an apparent domestic violence incident have started a trust fund to support her four children.

Pamela Apoko was an early childhood development assistant who worked at the Child Development Institute.

She died on April 2 in a violent incident at her Scarborough home.

"Colleagues at Child Development Institute were moved to help Ms. Apoko's children because of the sudden, violent and tragic loss of their mother, and also because of their work with and commitment to children and families," the institute said in a news release issued Thursday.

Donations may be made at any branch of the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), to:
Pamela Apoko "In Trust" CIBC account 08902-6369731.

Apoko's children are aged four to 15.

Neighbours described Apoko as a warm and friendly person who had recently served hot dogs to children at a neighbourhood event.

The immigrant from Africa got her driver's licence last year.

On the day she died, a teenager phoned 911 to say that his father was attacking his mother.

Two police officers responded to the call.

A male allegedly attacked one officer, leaving him with slash wounds.

Other police arrived.

"A man was armed with a knife. During the interaction, at least one shot was fired. The male was struck," Frank Phillips, a spokesperson for the Special Investigations Unit, a civilian body that reviews police shootings, said April 2.

The shot individual was taken to hospital for treatment, as was the wounded officer.

Police still haven't announced whether or not charges will be laid in connection with the incident.
