NEWMARKET, Ont. - A Mississauga man faces charges in the death of an off-duty Toronto police officer in a collision last summer.
Const. Riccardo Torchia, 30, was riding a motorcycle on Highway 7 near Highway 50 in Vaughan, just north of Toronto, when he was struck by a garbage truck turning left out of a private driveway.
Torchia was pronounced dead at the scene.
York Regional Police say Jose Couto, 55, was charged Wednesday with criminal negligence causing death.
He was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Couto was held in custody and given a court date today in Newmarket.
