Toronto police are crediting the actions of a tow truck driver for helping them make an arrest overnight.

Police were chasing a vehicle on Highway 401 in the city's east end when the suspect rammed into a police cruiser, forcing it off the road near the McCowan Road exit.

The man then jumped out of the vehicle and tried to flee the scene on foot.

The tow truck driver chased the man while staying in contact with other tow truck drivers in the area.

"The two truck driver saw the gentleman and chased after him. The vehicle was boxed in here by this tow truck driver," said Sgt. Simon Fraser. "I have to give absolute hats off to this guy."

Police arrested the suspect in the stairwell of a nearby apartment building on Greenbrae Circuit in the Markham Avenue and Lawrence Avenue East area a short time later.

But the tow truck driver shrugged off what he did.

"The police saved the day; I just kept an eye on the guy," Trevor Pogue told CP24. "They took it from there. They made the arrest."
