TORONTO - Toronto FC signed former German international midfielder Torsten Frings and Dutch striker Danny Koevermans to multi-year contracts Wednesday.

Both Frings and Koevermans were named designated players by the Major League Soccer team.

"We have signed two very important players with significant experience and technical ability," head coach Aron Winter said in a release. "Torsten and Danny will make an immediate impact at our club."

Frings has won 79 caps for Germany while Koevermans has four caps for the Netherlands.

Since the transfer window doesn't open until July 15, they will be eligible to begin play for Toronto FC on July 20 against FC Dallas. On occasion, MLS clubs will announce player acquisitions in advance (for example, Cuauhtemoc Blanco in Chicago and Blaise Nkufo in Seattle).

Sporting a 2-7-9 record going into Wednesday night's game with visiting Vancouver, Toronto is winless in nine MLS games. The last victory came May 7, a 2-1 decision over the Houston Dynamo.

Only the 2-7-8 Whitecaps had fewer points, and Vancouver beat Toronto in the teams' season opener.

Toronto has struggled under Winter, who has had difficulties fitting the players at his disposal into his Total Football system.
