Five people were sent to hospital Sunday afternoon after a head-on collision between a car and an SUV.

Emergency crews rushed to the scene on Highway 12, north of the town of Beaverton, on the east end of Lake Simcoe at around 1 p.m.

Police said the accident happened when the driver of the southbound car lost control and hit the SUV. The impact of the collision was so strong, it knocked the engine right out of the vehicle.

Three children and two adults were rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

Ontario Provincial Police closed a section of the highway for hours while they reconstructed what happened.
