A teenager is facing possible jail time after pleading guilty in the stabbing death of another teenage boy who was killed outside a Brampton mall.

The suspect, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, pleaded guilty to manslaughter Thursday in connection with the death of Klayton Wynter.

Wynter was 15 when he was stabbed outside the Bramalea City Centre in April 2011. The suspect was also 15 at the time.

Defence lawyer Paul Erskine said his client is a victim.

"I do see him as a victim. Not to say that the young person who died is not a victim as well," Erskine said. "Beyond what the sentence is imposed by the judge, this is something my client had to deal with for the rest of his life."

The stabbing occurred after Wynter and his friends allegedly robbed the suspect of a ring he had been given by his grandmother in the mall’s food court. Wynter and his friends also stole a watch and $20 from two of the suspect's friends.

The suspect and his friends were then threatened with a knife.

Angry about being robbed, the suspect and his friends rallied and confronted the thieves outside the mall and demanded their items back.

Punches were thrown and soon the suspect and Wynter were face-to-face -- Wynter with brass knuckles and the suspect with a two-inch knife blade. Wynter was stabbed in the torso and rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspect, who is now 18, will be sentenced in 2014.
