A young offender wanted in connection with a double murder has surrendered to authorities.

The 16-year-old youth, who can not be identified, has been charged with first and second degree murder in connection with the deaths of two men.

"Naturally, this is a very difficult time for a person in this situation. There has been a very serious tragedy taken place with two deaths," David Butt, the teen's defence lawyer, said Monday.

"We're dealing with a young man who has come through a very difficult series of events. He has voluntarily turned himself in and is looking forward to, at the right time, giving his side of the story."

His first court appearance will be Tuesday morning and he is expected to enter a plea of not guilty.

Shawn Day, 33, and Clifford Charles, 43, died after being shot in the chest on Rylander Boulevard, in the Kingston Road and Sheppard Avenue East area.

One victim was found dead inside a home at about 4 a.m., while the other was found a short time later bleeding inside a nearby SUV that had crashed into a tree. He died en route to hospital.

Homicide investigators said the men were targeted, but would not elaborate on the possible motive.

Authorities received judicial authorization last week to release the teen's name and photo.

The authorization has since expired and under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the young offender cannot be identified.

The suspect has no history of run-ins with the law or gang activity.

The victims are the city's 37th and 38th murders of the year.
