A 17-year-old driver has had his licence suspended after police discovered one of his friends was riding in the trunk of the car.

Ontario Provincial Police say the young man and five of his friends were driving east along Highway 401 when the car left the roadway and came to a stop in a ditch at around 5:43 a.m. Monday.

A fifteen-year-old girl and a 17-year-old man who was riding in the trunk were taken to hospital with minor injuries.

After questioning the driver, police discovered he held a G2 licence -- a driver's permit which imposes strict conditions on new drivers.

The driver, who cannot be identified because he is a minor, was charged with:

  • Stunt driving for carrying a passenger in the trunk
  • Careless driving

He was also charged with violating the following conditions of a G2 licence:

  • Carrying an excess of passengers that are under 20 years old
  • Carrying more passengers than seatbelts available

Vehicles belonging to drivers charged with stunt driving are automatically seized for seven days. The driver also has his licence suspended for the same period of time.
