A man sought in connection with a sexual assault, one alleged to have involved the use of a date-rape drug, has turned himself in to police.

Toronto Police Services said Saturday that Jagdeep Chahal, 32, of Brampton surrendered himself at 8:30 a.m. He is reportedly married.

He has been charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious thing.

Chahal is scheduled to spend the night in custody and appear in court at Old City Hall on Sunday.

The incident in question allegedly occurred on Jan. 22 at a nightclub in the King West neighbourhood and involved a woman in her 40s. She claims to have shared several drinks with a man before being sexually assaulted in a washroom.

The club's security cameras caught images of two men leaving the club. Police released a portion of the video on Friday. They say tips poured in as a result.

"The last 24 hours has been very fast," Det. Const. Mike Norman of the sex crimes unit told reporters on Saturday. "The image was released to the media, it was successful. We got phone calls to identify those people."

He didn't identify the actual club, saying it has been very co-operative and he didn't want it to be stigmatized.

Police have said that date-rape drug use isn't common, but does happen. The best thing people can do is protect themselves is:

  • Not accept drinks from strangers
  • Watch a drink get mixed or opened by a bartender
  • Never leave it unattended

"Be aware of your surroundings, be aware of your friends, and watch out for each other," Norman said. "It's not different in the clubs than it is just on the street."

And if you feel a change, "get to a hospital and have it investigated," he said, adding date-rape drugs "aren't pharmaceuticals" and can cause harm.
