Police are searching for a man in his 20s after a woman walked into a hospital earlier this week suffering from a gunshot wound to the face.

Few details have been provided, but police said a 20-year-old woman was shot early Monday morning in the area of John Garland Boulevard and Jamestown Crescent.

Police were made aware of the incident when the shooting victim was brought into a nearby hospital by friends. She was then rushed to a trauma centre, where she remains in serious condition.

Investigators later said she was shot while inside the basement of an Etobicoke home.

Police said Thursday that they are looking for 20-year-old Tyler Jacob Cameron, who is wanted for aggravated assault, discharging a firearm and criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

At a news conference, officers said it is believed that Cameron and the victim knew each other, and that the incident occurred at Cameron's family home.

Cameron has been described as 5-foot-4 and 155 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He may be driving a white BMW 323, with the licence plate number BWKS 218.

"He is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached," the statement said.

"If you see him, call 9-1-1 immediately."
