Ontario's Special Investigation Unit is probing a shooting that left one man dead and sent two police officers to hospital, Saturday night.

Police went to an apartment building at 200 Dufferin St., near King Street, at about 8 p.m. Saturday night.

There was an altercation between the officers and a 28-year-old man at the address.

During the altercation, one officer was cut in the face and the man was shot at least once.

The man died of his injuries at the scene.

Both officers were taken to hospital for treatment.

Sources told CTV News that the man was wanted by police when they found him at his mother's apartment, a place he was forbidden by a court order to be.

Sources said it was two members of the bail compliance unit who went to the sixth floor apartment looking for the 28-year-old.

Residents of 200 Dufferin St. told CTV News they often heard loud fights inside the unit.

Eight officers from the province's independent investigation agency have been designated to probe the incident.

The SIU is an arm's length agency that investigates reports involving police that involve death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
